Airedale Mills opens at the turn of the New Year, established as a substantial woollen mill specialising in scribbling and fulling. Built on land owned by local maltster John Skirrow Emsley, it quickly becomes a cornerstone of Rodley’s industrial identity.
The construction of the mill leads to the creation of Moss Bridge, a swing bridge spanning the Leeds – Liverpool Canal, enabling vital transport links and supporting the site’s growing operations.
Following more than a century of production, the mill closes and is eventually demolished. The site remains vacant for decades, becoming a forgotten fragment of Rodley’s past.
Developer Rodley Homes Ltd submits outline plans to transform the disused site into a new residential community, marking the first step towards regeneration.
Outline planning permission is granted for up to 69 homes, including the requirement for a new swing bridge to reconnect the site across the canal.
The original Moss Bridge is removed, paving the way for redevelopment, with a replacement crossing installed later the same year to support future access.
Detailed planning approval is secured for a thoughtfully designed 67-home development, including a mix of apartments, townhouses and affordable homes.
Updated landscaping and design details are submitted and refined, bringing the long-awaited transformation closer to the start of construction.
Construction of the first new houses begins in March 2026. From its origins as a hub of industry to its future as a place of calm, connected living, Canal Walk represents a rare opportunity to be part of Rodley’s continuing story – where heritage, nature and modern life come together seamlessly.
